A Blue at Heart,
From the Boundary
to the Bar

People are often surprised when they find out I’ve been a Carlton supporter for more than 45 years. Growing up in country New South Wales, I somehow found my way to the Navy Blue and, once you’re in, you’re in.

My first real engagement with the Blues came watching those great sides through the late ‘70s, ’80s and in to the ‘90s, particularly under Parkin. I loved watching Harmes, Bosustow, Jesaulenko and Doull.

As a kid, I wore the No. 11 on my back because of “The Flying Doormat”. That’s what being a footy fan is all about; you find the players you admire and they become part of your own sporting story.

These days, alongside cricket commentary, I’ve found myself immersed in a completely different passion project: El*Arquero tequila.

Now, before you picture the late-night shots that probably gave most of us a headache in our younger days, hear me out…

El*Arquero, which translates to “The Keeper”, came from a genuine curiosity to discover what proper tequila actually tastes like. I’d had my fair share of ordinary experiences over the years, but after travelling to Jalisco in Mexico and meeting the incredible families who’ve been making tequila for generations, I realised why I truly loved the spirit.

We partnered with a third-generation distillery that still does things the traditional way, using 100% Blue Weber agave and producing tequila that’s completely additive-free. No added sugars, colours, flavours or shortcuts — just craftsmanship, patience and quality. That was important to me because I wanted to be involved in creating something authentic, not simply putting my name on a bottle.

In many ways, it reminds me of sport. One of the things I’ve enjoyed most has been introducing people to tequila all over again. Watching someone take their first sip expecting the burn of their uni days, only to discover something smooth, complex and genuinely enjoyable, is pretty satisfying.

It’s a bit like convincing someone to give cricket, or Carlton, another chance. Sometimes all it takes is the right introduction.

So it’s a real thrill to share El*Arquero with fellow Carlton supporters. Whether you’re celebrating a win, catching up with mates after the game or simply enjoying a quiet drink at home, I hope you’ll give it a go.

Here’s hoping there are plenty more Carlton memories to celebrate together in the years ahead.
